- actively
promoting the welfare, conservation and survival of primates, particularly
woolly monkeys, in captivity and the wild
- developing
rehabilitation projects to return captive primates to their native habitat
and lives
- fighting
the illegal pet trade in South America
- conserving
natural habitats through education and sustainable living
The Trust works both
with the local community in Cornwall and internationally to fulfill these
aims. The Monkey Sanctuary has over 30 years experience and a world class
reputation for woolly monkey care.
Where did France go?
The
Amazon rainforest is roughly the size of Western Europe. An area as big
as France has now been cleared. Brazil alone is home to at least 80 species
of primates, some newly discovered, many now endangered.
The Monkey Sanctuary Trust is actively supporting concerned organisations
working to secure the future of primates in the Amazon.
The Woollies in Cornwall
In
particular the Trust is helping to care for and to fight for a better
life for a colony of Woolly Monkeys in Cornwall.
Previously brought to the country as pets, this species is now endangered
in the wild.
The sanctuary's ultimate hope is to return the Cornish monkeys to a protected
reserve in their native Brazilian Amazon home.
Rescue and rehabilitation
A cruel trade: the illegal pet-trade is estimated to be the second largest
in the world after the sale of illegal arms.
Hunters
shoot mothers and whole monkey colonies to obtain babies destined for
a short, sad, lonely life in cramped tiny cages.
Laws exist to prevent the sale of endangered animals. However, due to
lack of funding, there are no refuges which can provide and care for the
confiscated monkeys.
With this lack of provision for aftercare - having no place for the monkeys
to go - the authorities are reluctant to enforce these laws.
The Monkey Sanctuary wants to rescue and return
monkeys to their natural habitats.
Working for a
sustainable future

Trust is committed to a sustainable future for ourselves and all life
