Three Giraffe babies together

First of all Mary gave birth to Stephen on 24th May

Then Matilda gave birth to Richard on 28th June

Then Glenda gave birth to Jane on 14th July
Stephen, Richard and Jane are baby giraffes at Marwell Zoo. It is the first time that the zoo has had so many baby giraffes so close together. It’s also a rare occurrence in zoos.

All the mothers are feeding their babies themselves so no bottle feeds are required – much to the keepers’ relief!

The mothers are: Matilda (four years old), Mary (eight) and Glenda (Glendower) – eighteen.

Giraffes at Marwell are traditionally given names of English royalty. So the three newcomers have been named after medieval King Stephen, Richard Lionheart, and Jane, the third wife of Henry VIII. Jane Seymour’s brother, Sir Henry Seymour, owned Marwell Hall in the sixteenth century and it is possible that Henry VIII may have visited the Park.
